Women in Construction Week 2025 - Rachael Davies

As part of our Women in Construction Week series, we’re celebrating the women shaping Radii Planet Group across all areas of the business.

Today, we’re spotlighting Rachael Davies, Commercial Manager for Radii Planet’s Western Division. With nearly 25 years of experience in the construction industry, Rachael plays a pivotal role in overseeing commercial activities at both the pre-construction and post-contract stages. She is also a Fire Marshall and a Mental Health First Aider, demonstrating her commitment not only to project success but also to the well-being of her colleagues.

Tell us a bit about your role at Radii Planet Group.

As Commercial Manager for Radii Planet’s Western Division, I oversee commercial activities at both the pre-construction and post-contract stages. This includes cost estimation, tendering, and managing subcontract orders to ensure projects remain commercially viable. Additionally, I serve as a Fire Marshall for our regional office and act as a Mental Health First Aider.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I always start my day with a much-needed coffee! Then, I check my emails and put together a To-Do list to prioritise tasks. Each day varies—some mornings, I’m focused on analysing tender documents to prepare cost estimates and quotations, while other times, I’m busy processing subcontract orders we’ve successfully negotiated, ensuring they’re ready for the Contracts department. I also review work-in-progress cost data and attend internal meetings, as well as meetings with clients and suppliers.

As Fire Marshall, I’m responsible for testing fire alarms—so occasionally, I give my colleagues an unexpected (but necessary!) scare.

How did you get into this field, and what inspired you?

During my school years, I was always drawn to STEM subjects and loved the practical, hands-on side of learning. Thanks to a local training advisory company, I was introduced to Planet, who were looking for a Trainee Estimator.

Although the role wasn’t as hands-on as I initially expected, it turned out to be a fantastic opportunity. It allowed me to contribute to incredible projects and play a role in shaping the built environment.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned in your professional life?

Having worked in construction for nearly 25 years, I’ve seen significant changes in methods, industry trends, compliance, and workplace culture. One thing I’ve learned is that every day is a school day—there’s always something new to learn!

Another key lesson is never be afraid to ask questions. If something isn’t 100% clear, seek clarification. I’m fortunate to work with an incredibly knowledgeable team, and I’ve gained so much from the willingness of others to share their expertise.

Can you share a defining moment in your career that shaped who you are today?

A standout moment in my career was being promoted from Estimator to Commercial Manager. This promotion was a major confidence boost—it reassured me that my hard work, determination, and potential were recognised by my colleagues and the company.

Stepping into a leadership role allowed me to train and mentor new estimators joining the Western team. Helping others develop their skills and watching them grow in confidence was both challenging and rewarding.

How do you see the industry evolving for women in the coming years?

The construction industry has made huge strides in increasing opportunities for women since I first started. When I entered the field, it was rare to see women in either office-based or on-site roles. Now, there’s a noticeable shift toward inclusivity, with more companies embracing flexible working, equal opportunities, and advanced training programs.

I’ve personally benefitted from this evolution—flexible working has allowed me to raise my two amazing sons while continuing to develop my career. To keep the momentum going, it’s important that businesses continue prioritising initiatives that create an inclusive and supportive environment for women in construction.

Are there any industry trends or innovations that excite you right now?

Biophilic design—I love projects that incorporate natural elements into workspaces! Biophilic design strengthens the connection between people and nature by integrating features like greenery, natural lighting, and sustainable materials into the built environment.

The benefits go far beyond aesthetics—it creates a healthier, more productive, and harmonious workplace, which is something we can all appreciate in today’s fast-paced world.

What advice would you give to young women looking to enter this field?

Confidence is key! It’s something I had to develop in my early years. I would often hesitate to share my ideas in meetings, only to realise later that the final decision aligned with what I had been thinking all along.

If you have something to contribute—speak up. Your voice is valuable, and your perspective matters.

Who is a woman—past or present—who inspires you and why?

Without a doubt, my Mum. She gave me a strong, grounded upbringing and always guided me to make the right choices in life. No matter what challenges I’ve faced, she has been there to support me.

I hope to provide the same unwavering support for my own sons as they grow up.

What progress would you like to see for women in the workplace?

Greater equality across all areas of the industry!

The construction sector has historically been male-dominated, and while there have been positive changes, there’s still room for improvement. Women bring diverse skills, perspectives, and leadership styles that add immense value to the industry. Businesses need to continue fostering an environment where women are given equal opportunities to thrive.

If you could give one piece of career advice to all women, what would it be?

Stay curious and never stop learning!

Whether it’s gaining a new qualification, attending industry events, or simply keeping up with emerging trends, continuous learning is essential for career growth.

Lately, I’ve been exploring AI and how it could enhance my role. I believe there’s huge potential for AI to streamline processes, improve efficiency, and boost productivity across the construction industry. The more we embrace innovation, the more opportunities we can unlock.
