THE CLIENT.

The Rutherford Building is a Grade II listed structure within the University of Manchester estate, with the ground floor subject to a programme of refurbishment to improve fire compartmentation, acoustic separation and access control.

Working alongside contractor Seddon Construction and architect Arcadis, the project required specialist partitioning and fire door solutions that met stringent performance requirements while respecting the building’s protected status and existing architectural character.

OUR SOLUTION.

Working through our Northern contracting team, we delivered a fire door and screen package across the ground floor, combining certified fire integrity with the acoustic performance and bespoke detailing the project demanded.

To the entrance passageway and stairwell, we installed EI30 steel-framed double fire doors (Rw 30 dB) with arched overpanels designed to follow the existing architectural language of the listed building. Steel-framed fire-rated side screens (Rw 39 dB) were installed alongside, with units reaching up to 4,100mm in height. The steel framing provided the structural rigidity required for the larger openings while achieving the specified fire integrity rating. Punched window openings on the ground floor were addressed with EI30 fire-rated glazed units, maintaining the character of the original facade.

For internal separation between meeting rooms, we specified FireStop double-glazed fire-rated doors (Rw 48 dB), where the higher acoustic rating reflects the need for speech privacy within a working academic environment.

The ironmongery package was extensive, incorporating Dorma automatic door operators, flat scan sensors, finger guards, electronic locks and a smoke-sealed system throughout — supporting accessibility, controlled access and life safety compliance across the floor.

    CONTEMPORARY PERFORMANCE, HISTORIC SETTING.

Heritage listed buildings present some of the most technically and aesthetically demanding conditions in which to work. Existing openings are rarely standard, architectural details must be respected rather than obscured, and every element of the specification carries greater scrutiny.

The Rutherford Building is a further example of our experience delivering fire and acoustic performance within protected structures — where the building’s character remains intact, and the spaces work better for the people using them.
