PROJECT. OBJECTIVES

Client University of Aberdeen

When the University of Aberdeen planned its new £57 million, seven-floor purpose-built library – named Sir Duncan Rice after its former Principal and Vice Chancellor – Pihl Contractors and Danish architects, Schmidt Hammer Lassen, approached Planet Partitioning to put together the design and detail of the internal partitioning.

The work included partitioning throughout the library and creating office room frontages on multiple levels.

Our
solution.

Over 18 months, Planet worked within the budget to achieve the sound attenuation levels required, using a combination of PURE100 double glazed partitioning and PURE20 single glazed frameless glass partition systems.

Planet also installed timber doors throughout the library and was responsible for drywalling, which included solid partitioning between rooms and plasterboard wall lining.

    Project insights.

Planet used 27mm, low-profile frameless glazing to create a peaceful, open plan library with a spiralling off-centre atrium and 13km of shelving. It’s now home to 400,000 books, including rare collections on Arts, Humanities, Sciences and Social Sciences.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II opened The Sir Duncan Rice Library on the 24 September, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh.
