PROJECT. OBJECTIVES

Client The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea

Located between Kensington and Notting Hill, Holland Park School is seen as one of the best state schools in London.  However, one of the biggest threats to it's reputation was the condition of the older buildings, so the school decided to consolidate all the existing school buildings and facilities into a brand new purpose built structure.  Radii AG put forward a proposal for all interior glazing and partitioning, including the atrium, classrooms, library, sixth-form areas, gymnasium and doors.  On confirmation of costs, primary contractor Shepherd Construction commissioned Radii AG to undertake the interior glazing installation project for this highly prestigious project.

Our
solution.

Radii AG used demountable double glazed screens for all the classroom frontages and black laminated timber for the classroom doors.  The offices were all fitted with 30-minute fire rated doors in to the Radii AG white aluminium slimline doorframes.  This achieved an acoustic performance af 54dB Rw with double glazing.

Radii AG's in-house design team worked with Aedas to make sure the bespoke angled atrium glass used throughout all seven levels, was in line with the intended design and satisfied all relevant criteria.

Work began in 2010 taking just 15 months and on the 19th November 2012 the new Holland Park Building opened = a magnificent piece of modern architecture.

    Project insights.

One of the key challenges was bolting the atrium glazing to the steel work.  So Aedas created a seamless and minimal look and feel by using stainless steel bolts, which meant that each piece of glass and bolt position had to be millimetre perfect.

Radii AG's in-house design team engineered a clever solution to achieve this and as a result, the glass in the atrium ensures the extensive new facilities are visible and accessible, with learning on show.
