BREEAM, LEED, SKA and WELL: what a partitioning manufacturer can actually evidence.

Many of the projects we work on target certification to recognised sustainability and wellbeing assessment schemes such as BREEAM, LEED, SKA and WELL.

Creating flexible, agile internal workspaces will be a true benefit to organisations who aim to keep pace with the ever-changing needs of their community as working habits evolve.

With the industry-wide push towards a more sustainable future, the use of reconfigurable office partitions greatly reduces material wastage and, through the gathering of product EPD data, can be a notable contributing factor towards the achievement of recognised environmental standards and certifications.

The answer is never "this system earns you two points". Credits go to projects, not to products. An assessor looks at the whole fit-out, the evidence pack behind it, and the methodology used to compile it. Our job is to supply documentation that survives that scrutiny, early enough to be useful, and to say plainly where product performance ends and project decisions take over.

Credits go to projects, not to products.

We have just published a guide setting out, credit by credit, where our systems can contribute across four schemes. The summary below shows which credits each scheme puts in play.

What our systems can contribute to

Manufacturer ingredient disclosures, Health Product Declarations, Eurofins VOC test reports, Living Wage Foundation membership

Example

This is for BREEAM Version 7 for New Construction (UK and International), which applies to newly constructed buildings and major new developments.

Category: Health and Wellbeing

Hea 04 Indoor Air Quality (up to 5 credits plus 2 exemplary)

Aim

To recognise and encourage a healthy internal environment with excellent indoor air quality.

Assessment criteria

Emissions from construction products (up to 2 credits).

Credits awarded

Credits are awarded where construction products meet the volatile organic compound (VOC) emission limits, testing standards and additional criteria set out in the BREEAM requirements. A minimum of three out of five relevant product types, or all product types where applicable, must demonstrate compliance to achieve the available credits. Aluminium and glass are identified within BREEAM as inherently non-VOC emitting materials.

Our contribution

Our partition systems have been assessed through VOC emissions testing in accordance with recognised Eurofins testing methodologies. Testing considers emissions from associated and ancillary components, including gaskets, sealants and other non-metallic materials. Test results demonstrate compliance with the relevant low-emission performance criteria and may be used as supporting evidence for this credit.
